Hot Dog Shrew

Winter semester 2008 (RIT is on a trimester) I took a class titled Gesture Drawing for Animators as part of RIT's film and animation program. While the class was not quite what I had expected, I did learn an awful lot under the guidance of Prof. Nancy Beiman. Below is the a copy of the assingment for the final project.

A. COPY ONE page from your Sketchbook for each week from week 2 through week 9. please label each page with the date and your name and put them in chronological order into an inexpensive cardboard, 8.5 x11” paper binder. You will have a total of EIGHT pages. COPY the best drawings for each week. Please do not tear pages out of your WRITE YOUR" NAME, THE TITLE OF THE COURSE, PROFESSOR'S NAME, AND TERM CLEARLY and NEATLY ON THE BINDER and on each page of the portfolio.

B. DESIGN AN IMAGINARY CHARACTER: You will create an imaginary creature based on the materials you assembled in this course. You may

use your textbook, In-class or sketchbook drawings and live action reference as a guide. PLEASE DO NOT USE RESOURCES FROM ANIMATED FILMS other than SKELETON ACTION OF THE DEER. Name your creature and write its and your name, the class name, term, and professor's name on each page. Please do not design unicorns, dragons, Furries, or other preexisting-fantasy creatures. Invertebrate and exoskeletal animals are acceptable. Please keep human qualities to a minimum.

Create three views of your creature in profile. Use animation paper or

11" x 17" copy paper and draw the skeleton, muscles, and skin on

separate levels. (Recommended) YOU MAY SUBMIT ORIGINAL DRAWINGS.

1. Draw the SKELETON or STRUCTURE of the creature labeling bones,

if vertebrate; internal and external supports, if invertebrate or

exoskeletal .

2. Draw the BASIC MUSCLE GROUPS attached to the skeleton. You may

shade the muscle groups in color.

3. The OUTER COVERING of SKIN, FUR, FEATHERS, SCALES or material

of your choice must be in color. You are not restricted to xnature'—

use your imagination. Digital color is acceptable but the final MUST be

printed out as hard copy.

You may include views from other angles if you wish, or inset closer

views of areas that you feel are important.

After you have completed the design of the skeleton, musculature, and

the outer covering:

4. Sketch animated ACTION POSES of the creature in motion. You may

assemble a paste-up on 11" x 17" or animation paper.

5. Write a brief description of the species, its food, and its

habitat on 8" x 11" paper. You will be presenting this material in

class. You are graded on presentation as well as the creature concept.
